Do not give Xi'an a Beijing itinerary
Beijing and Xi'an are both history cities, and they do not need the same number of days.
Beijing's sites are far apart. Xi'an's famous stops fit a long weekend. Copying a five-day Beijing plan onto Xi'an leaves you circling the wall. Copying a three-day Xi'an plan onto Beijing misses the Wall.
On a short trip, pick one. On a longer trip, put the train between them and stop treating them as rivals.
