Comparison
Shanghai or Chengdu
Choose Shanghai if the trip is short and you want the city to be easy. Choose Chengdu if the point of the trip is food, a slower pace, and you have enough days to leave the coast.
Choose Shanghai
- You are landing internationally and do not want a second flight on day one.
- You want a dense metro and more English in the center.
- You have four days or fewer.
- You will use the city as a base for Hangzhou or Suzhou.
Choose Chengdu
- The trip is about eating, teahouses, and a city that is not a capital.
- You have about a week, so the extra flight is worth it.
- Published 2026 cost briefings put daily life well below Shanghai. We do not reprint their rents as our own survey.
- You are happy with spice. The famous food is supposed to be hot.
What does not decide it
Pandas are a half-day, not a reason to pick the city for a whole week. A skyline photo is not a reason to skip Chengdu if you already know you want Sichuan food. Neither city is the right single stop if the trip is mainly the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. That is Beijing.
Questions
Can I do both?
Yes, if you have ten days or more. The high-speed train between them is a long day. Check 12306 for the train you would actually take, and do not schedule a tight same-evening plan.
